El Chaltén

El Chaltén is a tiny town that the Argentines slapped together in the 1980s to claim the land before Chile.
It's the base for some astonishing hikes.

Nearing the glacier, the landscape becomes pretty barren.
This is approaching Glaciar Torre (the spikey peak in the background is Cerro Torre, one of my big crushes.)

Glaciar Viedma

We climbed up the rocks, donned crampons, and tromped around on top of the glacier.

Where the glacier began, there were big gaps between the ice and the rock.

This lagoon thing... a thin sheet of ice, below which the water went deep. It was that blue.

Our fearless leader, who really knew how to wield that ice pick. Here she's gathering ice for...

We met this french guy who told us this Cerro Fitz Roy hike wasn't worth the steep climb, because seeing the Fitz
up close wasn't that great. You know, like people, they look better from some distance.
Um.

yeah, this view sucks
